THE RESIDENTS
Whatever Happened To Vileness Fats? - (1984)

From 1972 to 1975, the Residents were working on a projected 14-hour black-and-white video epic, Vileness Fats. Working in cramped conditions with no budget and dreams of grandeur (14 hours?!) finally the project fell apart. Bits and pieces turned up, referenced in other recordings, especially the poem "Eloise," which was being performed back in 1972. Years later, after the successful Mole Show tour which showed that the group could grab a bizarre concept and run with it, the remaining hours and hours of footage were edited down to a vaguely comprehensible — for them — 30 minutes and released with a new soundtrack. This is a series of 11 pieces that simultaneously looks forward and back, using instrumentation based around their current emulator-led studio, but maintaining some of the feel of their music circa 1974. "Eloise" was dragged back into the studio for a reshaping, while much is given over to mysterious, ominous synth lines straight out of Mark of the Mole. While ostensibly a detour on the group's road through major projects, this album is a solid piece of work, claustrophobic, intense, melodic, aggressive, and wondrous. (allmusic.com)
